Bannockburn

When architect William Aitken drew up his plan for a community of country estates in 1924, he chose the name Bannockburn, for a quiet village in Scotland, and hoped to replicate the quiet, genteel life he remembered from his native land. Aitken’s plan, for secluded homes on large lots, has been preserved, and to a great extent, the way of life he loved has been preserved as well.

Bannockburn’s large, private estates have made it appealing to a number of sports celebrities; both Mike Ditka and Phil Jackson owned homes here when they coached Chicago teams, as did legendary Cubs third baseman Ron Santo.

Public Amenities

As a small community of approximately 1,800 residents, Bannockburn limits its public services to essentials such as a police department. The village contracts with neighboring Deerfield for fire protection, library and parks and recreation.

Residents have plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature and the outdoors on their own large lots and on the village’s quiet, wooded roads. For more active pursuits, the Lake County Forest Preserves offer facilities for swimming, boating, hiking and golf, as well as special events such as outdoor concerts and children’s activities.

Housing Stock

Bannockburn’s first home was built in 1924, and by 1929, 30 homes had been constructed, mostly in the southeast corner of the village. All are on large, private home sites; originally, the minimum lot size was one acre, but residents later choose to increase it to two

The median home value in 2008 was approximately $1.5 million; most current listings are in the $1 million to $2 million range, with some around $700,000 and a few over $2 million.

Transportation

Bannockburn’s close proximity to I-94 is an advantage for those who commute by car, but became problematic with road noise and increased traffic along Half Day Road. Remedy: sound barriers have been built to protect the village from noise pollution.

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

Although Bannockburn has one small retail area, Bannockburn Green, its residents mostly depend on their neighbors for shopping and dining. Lincolnshire to the west and Deerfield to the south offer a variety of options, and Highwood to the east, is known for its excellent restaurants.

Schools

True to its exclusive nature, Bannockburn has its own school district, with just one school, Bannockburn Elementary. Older students attend highly rated Deerfield High School.
